129: Wisdom 9:13-18b
Psalm 90:3-6,12-17
Philemon 9-10,12-17
St. Luke 14:25-33
Dear Parishioners,
Allow me to give you a little update on the present status of our school building. At the beginning of summer. we spent time cleaning out the school, making sure that many of the materials and furniture went to other Catholic Schools for their use in the upcoming year. I thought that most of this would be completed when the school year ended, but summer then found myself and staff members assisting to empty the building. Thank God for some of the youth that we coaxed into helping on one of the hottest days of the summer. For the donations to other schools, we received a $15,000 credit toward our debt reduction. There is still a bit more work to do before the building is complete. At this time, the Archdiocese of Baltimore is beginning a marketing campaign for the sale/lease of all the buildings that are now vacant due to the closing of schools. Also, the basement of the church, which was the pre-school had to also be cleared out. It is not an area that can be used anytime soon without a great deal of attention. At this time we will continue to use the hall for our parish functions and a few classrooms for Religious Education, as long as we have enough teachers come forward to volunteer their time from the parish and enough enrolled students to justify the expense of operating the building. I will keep you informed of any developments as progress is made and as we move ahead. I ask your understanding and patience as we are doing the best we can with what we have been dealt. Your support and dedication to St. Rose and a positive attitude is what will strengthen us in the Spirit.
May God bless each of you!

The Parish Office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2010.
The Cost of Discipleship
Greetings People of God!
Most of us feel the dread of guilt when we realize how many of our good intensions died undone. The expression, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions,” may help explain our pangs of conscience. Why do so many of our inspirations not blossom into action in our lives? Why do we struggle so to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit from within us? Our own needs and the countless ones of our family, co-worker/classmates, friends and associates constantly command us to invest our energy and love in them. These needs attract us and are not bad ways for us to spend our lives. But deep down we sense that too many significant projects slip through the cracks and too many trivial ones fill our lives. Jesus knows better than we do how we struggle to discern where the Spirit directs us.
The gift of today’s readings is that we hear the best way that we can be true to our sacred and holy desires. In brief, the Good News of Jesus in today’s Gospel is that the Holy Spirit guides us if we ask ourselves the question in each situation, “What would Jesus do now?” Guilt arises in us when we settle for lesser goods over greater ones. We easily follow our bad habits and invest ourselves in trivial rather than significant pursuits stirred in us by the Holy Spirit by questioning how Jesus would act. As harsh as Jesus’ words seem that we must “hate” everything but him, we suffer far worse realities of brokenness and pain if we do not follow the Holy Spirit’s call in us to act as Jesus did. If we do not act as Jesus acts, our lives become ships without rudders that crash and crumble on the rocks of reality. When we do follow the Spirit’s promptings, we feel delight that we are sailing toward our true home in God. Let’s try this week to follow more closely the Spirit’s promptings, knowing that we are weak and frail human beings who will fail, but who keep trying to develop into the loving persons God created us to be in the divine image of Jesus.
Your brother in Christ,

Jean Auld, Rose Eary, Ann McCauley, Albert Sindall-, John Cermak, Mary Ann Foster, Billy Bargar, Ellen Pulcak, Brother Jim Kelly, Evan Connor Smith, Andrew Konerth, Jr., Mary Anna Pons, George Gigioli, and Theodore Becker
Often in church we lack the simple signs of courtesy to one another that we would normally show to anyone anywhere. Here are some examples: When someone comes to sit in the row where we are, why make them climb over us instead of moving in? When we come to church why stand against the wall even when we are asked to take a seat? Why do we pass the Eucharist in the tabernacle without some sign of reverence or respect? A bow or a genuflect would show the proper respect, demonstrate faith in the presence of the Lord, and be a sign of reverence for the real presence of Jesus. The rosary is one of Mary's ways of drawing us into the mystery of her life and the life of Jesus. When we pray the rosary devoutly, God can teach us the mysteries of his life, death, and resurrection. The rosary is a powerful prayer, and it is credited with tremendous favors and blessings. Our Lady hears us when we pray the rosary. She acts, interceding with her Son to help us and draw us into his life. If you have a few minutes today or this week, stop and say the rosary. It will do wonders, and Our Lady will smile.
For those who have ordered and paid for the school yearbooks they are currently being printed and will be completed on August 31, 2010 and will be shipped the following week. Distribution of books should be around the middle of September, more information to follow.
